Lib Dems slam poor NHS performance in Tunbridge Wells

6.58.02pm GMT Sun 29th Jan 2006

Following revelations that local hospitals will be closed to all new non emergency operations because of huge budget deficits, local Liberal Democrats have blamed the Labour government's bizarre attitude to the service.

"The latest crisis to hit local hospitals is a direct result of the Government's mean-minded and penny pinching policies" said Alan Bullion, local party chairman. "Their obsession with targets is crippling our hospitals. Instead of creeping privatization, the NHS must return to a properly funded-system where the needs of patients come first".

The revelations have been caused by claims of memos from Rose Gibb, chief executive of South West Kent Primary Care Trust, instructing staff to cut operations following forecasts of a £3.3million deficit if nothing is done about the trusts financial situation. The Trust refute the claims.
